About the problem

Gullies and outside drains tend to cope fine in normal use and only show a problem once it rains hard, which is exactly when you notice water pooling by the back door or the gully overflowing across the patio. The usual causes are leaves and silt building up in the gully trap, grease from a nearby kitchen outlet, tree roots working into an older clay run close by, or a gully surround that's sunk or cracked after the ground beneath it has moved.

I clear the trap and the pipe run downstream in the same visit, not just what's visible from the surface, since leaves on the grate are usually the smallest part of the problem. If the surround itself has sunk or cracked, I'll reset or replace it while I'm there. Before I leave I run a proper flow test rather than a quick look, so you know it'll cope next time it rains hard rather than just looking clear on a dry day.

Why does my gully only overflow when it rains hard?

It means the trap or the run downstream is partly blocked, so it copes with normal use but can't handle the extra volume in heavy rain.

My gully grate keeps filling with leaves, is that the problem?

It can be part of it, but leaves on the surface are usually just what's visible. I'll check the trap and the pipe run underneath as well, not just clear what you can see.

The gully surround looks sunk or cracked, can that be fixed?

Yes, a sunken or cracked surround is usually reset or replaced in the same visit as clearing the blockage underneath it.

Is an outside drain my responsibility?

If it only serves your property and sits inside your boundary, yes. If you're unsure, call me and describe it and I'll tell you honestly.
